This was followed by Michael Bay's action blockbuster Armageddon, starring alongside Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck and Steve Buscemi, who would later go on to direct Liv in Lonesome Jim.
Liv was next seen in Tom Hanks' hugely successful passion project That Thing You Do!, his paean to the glory days of 1960s rock 'n' roll (as the child of a rock 'n' roll background, this was a film whose subject was also dear to Liv's heart). This was followed by another indie cult hit, Empire Records, but it was the leading role in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty that catapulted her to stardom at the age of eighteen. After making her film debut in Bruce Beresford's Silent Fall, she was cast by fledgling director James Mangold (who would go on to direct such hits as Girl, Interrupted, Walk the Line and Logan) in his first feature Heavy, a critical and commercial success that went on to gain cult status. Is there anything interesting about how the guy gambles money away at the beginning? The answer is no. Then apply that to every attempt at writing in the movie. Entertain the possibility that kids doing drugs is mildly amusing at best and that the movie does absolutely nothing in bringing that humor to the scene that warranted the time and money spent on it. Entertain the possibility that that shitty attempt at humor is staged in the most unremarkable by-the-book way. Let’s use the Gwar joke as an example: entertain the possibility that a teenager eating pot brownies and hallucinating Gwar isn’t funny. I challenge anyone who liked this movie as a kid to watch it again with an open mind. It was mediocre writing in, it was acted and directed in a mediocre fashion, they edited the mediocre footage in a mediocre way and naturally a mediocre movie was the end result. I was incapable of understanding that you can put a joke in and a movie and that’s not enough. I see fanboys do their fanboy shit today and I always get it because I did the same stupid shit: I convinced myself Empire Records was a good movie in the months I waited for its video release. Scratch that, I liked about a third of the soundtrack. I think the "one day" story makes it better, but I'm really curious to know who is missing from the final product.Īs a kid I liked the soundtrack. As I understand it, this movie was heavily edited in post-production and three major characters were completely excised, and the story was cut to take place over one day instead of two. I just think that another actor would have found a better way to play Corey's anxiety and made her a much more interesting character. This is a zeitgeist 90s movie, and she was one of the zeitgeist 90s girls.

She really couldn't carry a movie yet, and she gets outshined in nearly every scene except when she's opposite Johnny Whitworth who is obviously struggling to find how to play a stereotype rather than an actual character.
I think Liv Tyler has since become a much better actor, but the main thing that brings this movie down for me is the fact that she is kind of the central character in what is otherwise a really well-rounded ensemble. I really do enjoy this movie, but I can also see why it bombed.
